Manufacturing a 3D Smile

- Submitting a file upload
- File Types pdf, ai, svg, and svg1
Learning Target - Design in three dimensions your own object that has to do with world smile day on it using Tinkercad, understanding the hole and group functions to create your own shapes. Then make that design into a MergeCube ready shape to hold in your hand, made out of cardstock that can augment reality view an animated display of your unique shape.
Success Criteria - Your own successfully designed shape that is unique yet still simple enough to unwrap and re-wrap in cardstock and related to the World Smile Day.
Friday, October 2nd is both National Manufacturing Day and World Smile Day.
We are going to combine the two and “manufacture smiles” using 3D modeling both digitally first then physically second.
Then along with the smile shape design is adding in the MergeCube augmented reality mapped design.
Remember the definition and point of "manufacturing" is to be able to mass produce something, so designing it repeatable and simple yet not so simple it's plain and boring. That is the design challenge.
2020 Update: Because students are home and most likely unable to print the requirement to make a physical 3D shape is not reasonable, instead the focus is to develop the best possible plan balancing both unique shape with ease of construction, then submitting it for Mr. Hurst to print, cut out and assemble in roughly 10 minutes on zoom.
Videos of Mr. Hurst demonstrating how to do this project 2020
To Get Started:
Go to Tinkercad.com
Designing First Week
How to Design:
Unwrapping / UV Mapping 2nd Week
Augment reality ready
MergeCube as individual jpgs - Use these to place where desired on the UV map
Deploy Pepakura from Zenworks:
How to use Pepakura:
Recalculate Parts Icon for making the plan larger or smaller on the paper.
Note this version of Pepakura is the free version that does not allow file export, it does however allow file print and you can print to PDF, then from Adobe Acrobat open that PDF and save it as an image file to put into other software to create a lasercutting path, or to have more control over where to place the mergecube augment reality scan codes.
If you wanted to Lasercut your plan instead of hand cutting it out see this video. - I will update soon to have a clearer example of how to make a laser cut ready plan. -it'll be the same process, I just learned you do not need the dotted lines at all, just the external shape to cut out.
Better example on how to go from Tinkercad to print out, or / and to lasercutting.
Week 3 - 3D Animation and Augmented Reality
Basic animation in Blender, Export as FBX file type
Advanced animation in Blender,
CoSpaces is other software to create augmented reality 3D animations that are more advanced, even interactive.
Class Code: U9XNE
First: Use Mergecube object viewer online website, use district Google account to upload from Blender.
Then: View your 3d augmented reality animation using mergecube object viewer app.
Each Day of this 3 week project - 2020
Thurs (Odd period) / Friday (Even periods) - Intro Overview, begin Tinkercad 3D model designing
Mon / Weds - Tinkercad designing
Tues / Weds - Tinkercad designing
Wednesday September 23rd - 3 digital designs due
Thursday / Friday - Pepakura 3D - MergeCube texture in PDF getting ready for print
Mon / Weds - MergeCube 3D animating lecture / Augmented Reality
Tues / Weds- MergeCube 3D animating lecture / Augmented Reality
Thursday / Friday - 3D Animating,
Friday - World Smile Day, National Manufacturing Day - Present / Reflect - Project Due
-If you choose to work ahead, go for it, impress me, if you choose to work at this pace, I expect it will be adequate time to accomplish the goals of this project.
TURN 3 IN DIGITALLY week one to different canvas assignment pages BY snipping tool, screen capture the object in Tinkercad by whichever view best shows off your design.
Turn 1 final design digitally as an unwrapped plan with object code or cospace qr code as pdf or vector ai / svg file.
Cospaces is not required, just one of the augmented reality animation systems is expected, CoSpaces is harder, blender uploading to merge is easier.
TURN IT IN PHYSICALLY by having Mr. Hurst take a picture on his iPad or you can take the pic and submit here.. ** NOT REQUIRED 2020

4. Innovative Designer Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions. Students: a. know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems. b. select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design constraints and calculated risks. c. develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process. d. exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance and the capacity to work with open-ended problems.
